A Modern Approach to Composite Dust Extraction

In modern industry, particularly in sectors such as the automotive, aerospace, and sporting goods industries, composite materials play a key role. However, processing them on CNC machines presents specific challenges in terms of environmental cleanliness and workplace safety. This is because composite dust is not only highly abrasive but often explosive as well.

As part of a recent project, we implemented a system that eliminates these risks while optimizing operating costs.

 

Challenge: Abrasiveness and Explosion Risk

Composites (often mixtures of carbon or glass fibers and resins) generate very fine dust during machining. This dust acts as an abrasive, placing high demands on the design of ductwork and filter elements. The second, more critical factor is the dust explosivity index, which requires strict compliance with ATEX standards.

 

The Heart of the System: G&G Jet BAG Filtration System

For this application, we selected the proven G&G Jet BAG regenerative filter. This type of equipment is designed for continuous industrial operation.

  • JET technology: The filter bags are cleaned using pulses of compressed air, which are controlled based on the current pressure drop. This ensures constant suction performance and extends the service life of the filter media.

  • Explosion protection: The filter is equipped with a certified explosion relief membrane. In the event of ignition of a dust-air mixture inside the filter, the pressure wave is safely released into the external environment, thereby protecting the integrity of the facility and the health of employees.

 

Intelligent control and energy savings

Extraction is not just about performance, but also about efficiency. The system was designed to respond to actual production needs:

  • Automatic dampers: Each CNC machine is equipped with an automatically controlled damper. Extraction is activated only for the machine that is currently in operation.

  • Frequency converter: The central fan is controlled by a frequency converter that adjusts the speed based on the number of open dampers. If only one machine is running, the system does not waste energy by operating at full capacity.

  • Air recirculation: Filtered and purified air is not vented outside the building but is returned to the hall. During the winter months, this results in significant savings on heating costs, as heat remains inside the building.

  • Control: Frequency converter based on vacuum pressure

  • Automation: Pneumatic dampers linked to CNC control
