Aspiration of the grain silo

Effective Grain Silo Dust Extraction with an Emphasis on ATEX Safety

The storage and post-harvest processing of grain produces one constant byproduct: fine organic dust. In the enclosed spaces of conveyorways and silos, this dust poses not only a health hazard but, above all, an explosion risk. As part of our recent project, we implemented a comprehensive extraction system with a total capacity of 40,000 m³/h, ensuring safe operation of the entire silo.

A comprehensive solution for three key nodes

Given the scope of the technology and the various operating modes, we divided the system into three separate filtration branches. This solution enables selective extraction depending on which part of the line is currently in operation:

  1. Lower conveyor routes: Extraction from the intake and routes beneath the silos, where high dust levels occur during unloading.

  2. Upper conveyor routes and filling: Ensuring cleanliness during the loading of material into individual silo cells.

  3. Grain cleaner aspiration: Connection to the processing cleaner, which generates the largest volume of dust particles and impurities.

Safety First (ATEX Standard)

Grain dust is classified as explosive. Therefore, all our filtration units are supplied in an ATEX-certified design.

  • Antistatic filter media: Prevent the build-up of static charge.

  • Explosion-proof membranes: In the event of a dust explosion, they safely release the pressure wave, thereby protecting the filter structure and surrounding equipment.

  • Robust construction: Withstands the specific conditions of agricultural operations.

Intelligent performance and regeneration control

Modern filtration systems must be more than just a "noisy fan." They must operate efficiently.

  • JET regeneration technology: Our units use automatic cleaning of filter hoses via a counterflow of compressed air. The system evaluates the pressure drop and initiates regeneration only when it is truly necessary, which saves compressed air and extends filter life.

Thanks to the fans being equipped with frequency converters, the system continuously measures the negative pressure in the ductwork. If any branch is closed or operating at lower capacity, the converter automatically reduces the fan speed. The result is significant energy savings and lower overall operating noise.

Technical Overview of the Project

  • Total suction capacity: 40,000 m³/h

  • Number of filtration units: 3 (separate circuits)

  • Filtration type: Fabric filters with JET regeneration

  • Safety certification: ATEX (dust explosion protection)

  • Control method: Vacuum control using frequency converters

  • Applications: Conveyor routes, silo filling, grain cleaning plant

Conclusion

Properly designed grain silo ventilation is not only a legal requirement but also an investment in employee safety and the longevity of the technology itself. Our solution combines high performance with intelligent control, delivering a return on investment through energy savings.
